One code. That's the whole setup.
Baby Brain generates a code on the first phone. You put it on the second one. They're now the same account, except there isn't an account.

You don't both need to be there. You don't need to do it in a particular order, or within some window. Add a phone tonight and a tablet in March and they'll all show the same thing.
First phone
- Open Baby Brain and add it to your home screen.
- Tap Set up Baby Brain. It makes the code for you, something
like
WPTP-4K6B-JBP9-QP4Z-4E1R-Z9ZF. - Your phone will offer to save it to your passwords. Let it. Then tick the box and tap Start logging.
Every phone after
- Open Baby Brain, add it to the home screen.
- Tap I've got a code and put it in. Your password manager should offer it; if you're typing it by hand, capitals and dashes don't matter. It's thirty characters, which is thirty characters of one-time faff in exchange for never having an account. Do it while someone else is holding the baby.
- Check the six digits on screen match the other phone, and you're in.
Those six digits are just a typo check. If they don't match, someone's fat-fingered it, and that phone will sit there quietly logging into a history of its own, which you'd discover about a week later, at 3am, in a mood.
Keep the code somewhere. It's not a password I can reset, because I never receive it. It's the thing that encrypts your entries, and it only exists on your phones.
That sounds scarier than it is. Any phone that's already set up will show it to you again: Settings → Show my sync code. You'd have to lose the code and every device at once to be stuck. Saving it to your password manager covers that too.
A few honest details
- Let it generate the code. One you'd remember is one someone could guess, and guessing it is the only way in. The generated one isn't guessable by anyone, me included.
- Add as many devices as you like. Both phones, a tablet, a new handset when you drop yours down the loo.
- My server forgets after 30 days. It's a relay between your devices, not a backup. Your phones keep the full history; the server only holds each change long enough for the other phone to pick it up.
- Lost a phone? Whoever has it can still read what's on it. Change the code on your other devices and they'll start fresh, but what was already on that phone stays on that phone. I'd rather say that than pretend there's a remote wipe.
